Puppy's First Groom – Everything You Need to Know 🐶✂️

Bringing your puppy for their first grooming appointment is an exciting milestone. At Top Dog Groomers in Bishopstoke, we believe a puppy's first experience should be calm, positive and enjoyable, helping them build confidence for a lifetime of happy grooming.

When should my puppy have their first groom?

We recommend introducing your puppy to grooming from around 12–16 weeks of age, once they've had the appropriate vaccinations and your vet has advised it's safe to go out.

Starting early helps your puppy become familiar with the sights, sounds and gentle handling involved in grooming.

What happens during a puppy groom?

A puppy groom is all about introducing your puppy to the grooming environment at their own pace. Depending on your puppy's breed and coat, their appointment may include:

  • A gentle bath using puppy-friendly shampoo

  • A warm, gentle blow dry

  • Brushing and coat care advice

  • Nail trimming

  • Cleaning around the eyes and paws if needed

  • Plenty of reassurance, praise and breaks

Our aim is for your puppy to leave feeling relaxed and confident.

Why is early grooming so important?

Regular grooming from a young age can help:

  • Prevent knots and matting

  • Keep the coat clean and healthy

  • Make future grooming appointments much less stressful

  • Allow us to monitor your puppy's skin, coat, ears and nails

  • Build trust and confidence with gentle handling

A calm, one-to-one experience

At Top Dog Groomers, every puppy receives individual attention in our quiet, one-to-one salon. We never rush the process and always work at a pace that suits your puppy.

Our experienced groomers understand that every puppy is different. Some are naturally confident, while others need a little more time, patience and encouragement—and that's perfectly normal.

How often should my puppy be groomed?

The ideal schedule depends on breed and coat type, but many puppies benefit from regular visits every 6–8 weeks after their first groom. We'll be happy to recommend a grooming plan that's right for your puppy.
